Sometimes it seems like resolutions are just meant to be broken. But sticking to our goals we set at the beginning of the year can help. These tips have helped me to set my resolutions and actually stick to them
I love celebrating New Years. Another year’s end, and another excuse to get glammed up to celebrate with friends and family. Although I love a good party to ring in the New Year, I also look at it as a time to get rid of bad habits, better myself for the year to come. It’s out with the old, in with the new!
Make smaller resolutions
A lot of people don’t stick to their resolutions because they need to do a better job of making them in the first place. Change is hard. Setting smaller goals will make it easier to keep your resolution. Instead of making the big resolution of having healthier habits, I broke my resolution down into a few small goals like:
– Cut out soda from my diet
– Workout 3 times a week
– Go to bed an hour earlier
– Eat less chocolate
– Drink more water
When you make your New Year’s resolution, think of small, realistic goals. Will you really stop drinking soda completely? Probably not. Limit yourself to a couple of drinks per week. That way, you won’t set yourself up to fail right from the start.
Write down your goals
After I came up with smaller, easier goals, I wrote them down on a piece of paper. Then I taped the paper to my mirror so I could see them every day while I got ready. Each morning, I looked at the list to remind myself to stick to my goals.
Get your friends in on it
Last year, my friends and I tried something different that really helped me follow through with my New Year’s resolution. Right after Christmas, we all got together and we came up with our New Year’s resolutions. I found that sharing with friends helped me keep my resolution. Every few weeks we’d all check on each other to see our progress. Having that kind of accountability helped us stay on track.
Make a group chat to motivate each other
If you’re anything like me and my friends, we all love staying in touch with a group chat. We made a special group chat to encourage each other to keep our New Year’s resolutions. A lot of my friends wanted to get healthy so we even created a private Facebook group to post articles with healthy recipes and fitness articles. Having motivation from friends really helped me stay inspired and follow through with my goals.
Celebrate your achievements
Sticking to a resolution isn’t easy! So when you actually do it, you definitely deserve to celebrate. Every couple of weeks, my friends and I would get together and congratulate each other for all of our hard work in following through with our New Year’s resolution.
